Week 1 overview

WE DID IT!

It's only been a week?!? That's crazy -- it felt like a month zoomed by during this time. So many things have happened during the week. I'm overly exhausted, but at the same time I'm super happy with myself.

The first week was certainly a pleasant surprise. I expected the bootcamp to be like this, and at the same time I didn't. I knew that the bootcamp would be good for my life and career development, but I didn't think it would be affecting my life to the extent as it is right now. The bootcamp not only teaches you the skillset to be a good developer, but also unites like-minded, motivated individuals that you can relate to and grow with. I am so glad I've taken this opportunity. I'm so glad I decided to choose Makersquare over Coding Dojo.

The venue, ROC (Real Office Centers), is a building that is half-owned by Makersquare and the other half of the building is an office space that is shared by many different companies. ROC is great! It has many common areas and private rooms for our developer needs. I love the laid-back environment and the resources they provide (coffee, whiteboards, bean bag chairs, etc.) which assures we can have a comfortable learning experience.

People in my cohort come from such diverse backgrounds. There are people ranging from someone who never had a job before, to a married guy who has been working as manager of a big company. I can learn random and interesting things from just listening to the cohortmates' conversations. I could not pick out one person that I don't like in my cohort.

The staff at Makersquare is great; they provide instant feedback, cater to your needs, and really care for your success. The schedule and curriculum are streamlined, up-to-date and don't have much flaws in the system.

Our fellows (graduates that choose to stay at Makersquare and take the roles as TA's for upcoming cohorts) have been telling us the first week is always the most hectic -- and that reflects in our weekly schedules. Jeff, one of our fellows, told us that the schedule will move towards more and more pair programming each week, until we hit the second six weeks, where most of the time will be devoted to projects.

I'm so glad I took the time to meet up with my old friend starting a few weeks before bootcamp started. Not only did this make me happier, but it also conditioned my antisocial body to get ready for all the people-meshing that came with Makersquare.
